Apple’s iPad Gets Official 1st Day Tally: 300,000-Plus Sold

Apple's iPadApple sold more than 300,000 of its much celebrated iPad tablet computer on its first day at Apple stores and Best Buy retailers, the computer company said today.
The total figure for both opening day Saturday and Sunday likely comes close or exceeds expectations of about 400,000 in sales for the weekend. No figure was available for Sunday, but many stores were open despite the Easter holiday.
Apple also said that iPad users downloaded more than one million apps from its App Store, and more than 250,000 e-books from its iBookstore during the first day.
“It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world — it’s going to be a game changer,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, said in a statement. “iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad.”
Wall Street analysts are now setting a projection of nearly 5 million iPads sold during the next 12 months.
The sales figure for Saturday includes deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores, Apple said.
The WiFi-only iPad starts at $499.
