Android, RIM, iPhone Send Smartphone Sales Soaring

iPhone and BlackBerry smartphonesSmartphone sales in the first quarter of 2010 soared 48.7 percent from a year ago, so much so that Research in Motion (RIM) – the maker of BlackBerry – broke into the top five overall sellers of mobile phones for the first time.
The growing preference for smartphones – which run operating systems on a specific platform and offer many more features than a traditional cell phone – helped propel worldwide mobile phone sales in the first quarter to 314.7 million units, a 17 percent jump from a year ago, according to Gartner, the technology research firm.
Smartphone sales to end users reached 54.3 million units, an increase of 48.7 percent, compared to the first quarter of 2009.
Apple, the mobile device and computer giant, also made major headway with its iPhone. The first quarter was iPhone’s strongest quarter yet, with a 112.2 percent increase in sales.
Smartphones with Google’s Android operating system also showed impressive numbers. Sales of Android-based phones in North America alone increased 707 percent from a year ago.
“In the first quarter of 2010, smartphone sales to end users saw their strongest year-on-year increase since 2006,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. “This quarter saw RIM, a pure smartphone player, make its debut in the top five mobile devices manufacturers, and saw Apple increase its market share by 1.2 percentage points.”
In the smartphone OS (operating system) market, Android and Apple made the biggest moves in the first quarter of 2010. Google’s Android moved to the No. 4 position displacing Microsoft Windows Mobile for the first time. Both Android and Apple were the only two OS vendors among the top five to increase market share year-over-year.
“Symbian remained in the No. 1 position but continued to lose as Nokia remains weak in the high-end portfolio,” Gartner said.
