Toys R Us Offers Free Layaway Through Oct. 31

Toys R Us said it will waive the upfront service fee for all layaway orders created in its stores through October 31.
The retailer is aiming to gain an edge in the run-up to the holiday shopping season.
Offering a free, no-minimum purchase layaway program early in the season allows customers to take advantage of layaway’s flexible payment terms, Toys R Us said.
Shoppers will have until December 16 to pick up their orders.
Layaway orders will be available after October 31, but a $5 service fee will apply.
Toys R Us introduced layaway in its stores in 2009 for “big gift” items, such as bikes, swing sets, dollhouses and play kitchens. Since then it has added new categories, including video game hardware and tablet computers, to the list of products eligible for the pay-over-time option.
In 2011, layaway was expanded to include all “play things” at Toys R Us stores nationwide.
Layaway plans become widespread during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Over time, credit cards nearly made such programs extinct. However, layaway has made a comeback since the financial crisis of 2008 and subsequent credit crunch.
