Will Mozilla's Firefox OS Make Smartphones More Affordable?

Will Mozilla's Firefox OS Make Smartphones More Affordable?Mozilla is taking a shot at Apple and Google in the hyper-evolving smartphone marketplace with its new mobile operating system, Firefox OS, and the early unveiling of two new smartphones for developers.
The key to Mozilla’s entry into this field is pricing.
A Mozilla smartphone could potentially emerge with enough varied, open-standard HTML5 apps to compete with the iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy series –– but at a lower price.
Just how much lower, no one is saying just yet.
Firefox OS is a new mobile operating system built entirely using open web standards.
The two Mozilla smartphone models, the Keon and larger Peak, won’t ship to consumers until later this year. The phones are being developed by Geeksphone, in partnership with Telefonica, Spain’s telecom giant.
Here is Geeksphone’s take on the Peak: “A powerful developer preview device introducing cutting edge features, like a 4.3″ qHD screen, at a price you could never have imagined. For those who like to be one step beyond, Peak is your developer preview device.”
Mozilla’s mission is to duplicate its browser success in the mobile arena. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide use Firefox to connect to the Web, using open standards and open technologies.
“Now we are working on bringing the power of the web to mobile, through Firefox OS, along with all the power of open standards and an open community, and once again, we’d like to invite web developers to join us,” said Stormy Peters, Director of Websites and Developer Engagement at Mozilla, in a blog post.
Carlos Domingo, Director of Product Development & Innovation at Telefónica Digital, tells thenextweb.com that users can expect a commercial launch of mobile Firefox OS in 2012, without saying exactly when.
He also did not going into any specifics on prices. But Domingo said, “It’s way cheaper than what is out there – but the performance is really good.”
