Presidents' Day Car Deals: Do the Discounts Match the Hype?

Presidents' Day Car Deals: Do the Discounts Match the Hype?By now, you’re probably fed up with all those overdone car dealership commercials hyping Presidents’ Day discounts. But are the deals for real? And are they worth pursuing?
Consumer Reports studied these deals enough to come up with the 25 best deals on American-made cars for Presidents’ Day weekend.
CR’s criteria: the featured vehicles must have scored well in testing, had average or better reliability in CR’s subscriber survey, and performed well in government or insurance-industry safety tests, if the vehicle was tested.
Consumer Reports then scrutinized the sales leads through its Build & Buy service, which indicates “not just potential discounts, but real-world pricing,” the organization said.
“These are cars as popularly equipped with real price quotes from dealerships bound to high customer service standards,” CR said.
In an ironic twist, Japanese carmakers fared very well. How is this possible? CR’s American-made requirement includes models manufactured in the U.S. by foreign carmakers, such as Nissan, Mazda and Toyota.
“If buying American is a top priority, we encourage you to always triple-check the window sticker on the specific model you are considering to verify its country of origin and parts sourcing,” CR said.

CR said the best discounts are on remaining 2012 models and vehicles that are about to be replaced, such as the Chevrolet Silverado. “Such leftovers may be harder to find, but if saving money is your priority, it is worth the look.”
