Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales Jumps into Bitcoin World with Help of Coinbase, RedditJimmy Wales of Wikipedia fame has started to “play around” with bitcoin, and plans to “reopen” conversations with the Wikimedia Foundation board of directors about accepting the cryptocurrency.
On its own, this piece of news may not seem earth-shattering, except for two key points. Wikipedia.org is the 6th most popular website in the world, and the Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization, helps fuel wiki-based projects through contributions.
The second point: Wales went on the Reddit to explain his first foray into the world of bitcoin, inviting any helpful advise from Redditors.  And its makes for fascinating reading.
“I set up a personal account at Coinbase to play around with bitcoin,” writes Wales, who in 2001 was a co-founder of Wikipedia.org. “I thought I would buy and sell some, and try to spend on real world things, etc. I’ve been watching bitcoin for a long time, of course, and I thought it past due to test it as a consumer – how hard is it, how confusing is it, etc.”
San Franciso-based Coinbase has grown quickly in popularity as the top U.S. provider of bitcoin wallet services (more than 1 million customers) and as a bitcoin payment processor for businesses.
“I’m planning to re-open the conversation with the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Directors at our next meeting (and before, by email) about whether Wikimedia should accept bitcoin,” Wales writes. “One reason (not the only reason) that we haven’t is that setting it up as an option during the fundraiser has a lot of implications (we know, for example, and you will likely find this counterintuitive, that the more payment options we give people, the less they donate).”
